The Re-view

Nicola Roberts - Lucky Day (Official Music Video)

This bird gets more coverage on my blog than most other artists, and I think it’s because, in a pop landscape that’s full of female singers all competing against one another, she actually stands out in the crowd. Her vocals, her lyrics, her image. I like how she steers away from the safe predictability of releasing music you’d expect from someone who is ex-girlband. (I KNOW! THEY’RE REUNITING. BLAH BLAH BLAH).

Whilst Cheryl releases safe R&B-lite pap that she can’t even sing along to live and Nadine has the lungs but forgets that it’s not 2005 anymore, Nicola just tramples all over expectations of what is commercially viable and seems to have a ‘bugger it’ attitude. Even after ‘Beat of My Drum’ misfired and stalled at #27, Roberts was quoted as not being that fussed, and more chuffed that NME had backed her track.

And so that brings her to the ‘make or break’ second single. That which, should it follow in it’s predecessors footsteps, will most likely result in Nicola’s career stalling somewhat. Saying that, Nads didn’t even get to this point so there must be some faith in the girl.

And the good news is that single #2 is even better than ‘Beat of my Drum’. Much better. And that was pretty brilliant itself. This gloriously Summery tune though is probably more in the realms of the commercially safe and airwave-friendly. Whilst it’s coming a little late and won’t be released until Autumn, enough airplay should see it becoming a deserving contender for song of the Summer.

Despite receiving a flash of Nicola’s dodgy leopard print pants at one point (she oughta be careful getting out of limos), the video is pretty simple with the youngest member of Girls Aloud wandering around the streets being all quirky and girly, like.

I did like the sperm brick wall effect at around 1 min 34 secs too.

‘Lucky Day’ will be released on September 18, 2011. The album, ‘Cinderella’s Eyes’, to follow a week later on September 26.
